Maureen FitzSimons, better known as Maureen O'Hara in America, was an exceptional child. However, for an Irish girl with talented parents and extended families, these qualities were natural. Maureen was welcomed into this cherished haven in Ranelagh, Ireland on August 17th of 1920. Marguerita FitzSimons was an accomplished contralto. The father of her, Charles FitzSimons, managed an enterprise in Dublin and was also the owner of the famous Irish soccer club "The Shamrock Rovers." Maureen was the second of six FitzSimons children - Peggy, Florrie, Charles B. Fitzsimons, Margot Fitzsimons and James O'Hara completed this beautiful family. Maureen was a star athlete and enjoyed playing rough sports. This interest was combined with an unnatural talent for performing. Her winning of almost every Feis awards for her native country's drama and theatre performances is a testimony to this. She was accepted at the Abbey Theater by age 14, and she was able to fulfill her goals of opera as well as classical theater and singing.
